DIY Production V - The Outcome

By Laura Donnelly Finally, you are getting to see the results of weeks and months of hard work You’ve reviewed a proof and seen a sheet come off press to make sure everything was just right. Ah, but there are things that you will have to see when it is all over to truly know the outcome of everyone’s labor. I will discuss your surprises here. 1. Let your design firm be your guide. Follow the guidance of your design firm for they are the ones with trained creativity to take your project to a level you could not have thought of on your own. Would you have thought to put a spot varnish over the images so that they popped off the page more? Do you know what a spot varnish is? How about printing percentages of a metallic ink (not reproducible on proofs) to give your project an extra shimmer? These are things that you will not be able to see until the project is done and something that the firm can only describe to you the best way they know how. 2. Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “An idea is salvation by imagination.” You will have to envision what your project will look like saddle-stitched or perfect-bound because you will not get a sample beforehand, just as you will not get a sample of what the die cut or the foil embossing will look like until the work is actually done. One of the joys of print is to see your creation complete on something other than your home printer, seeing how the ink reacts to a special paper chosen and how the finishing touches like binding, trim and foils take shape. Your project can be so much more than what your computer is showing you as it too has its limits. As you can see, the world of print production is vast and I only scratched the surface. You can choose the do-it-yourself route (more power to you) but even in your business I am sure time is money. I can assure you that you will spend less money having experienced people handling production for you. I attempted to change out an electrical outlet in my house, but I only got zapped once before I had that “perhaps I should call an electrician” moment. Hopefully these past several issues have given you some insight and some things to prevent you from getting zapped yourself.
