International Day of the Girl
Posted 10/11/2019 03:32PM

Today, October 11, is the International Day of the Girl.

In 2011, as the result of youth advocacy, the United Nations declared October 11 to be International Day of the Girl. It's mission is to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for improving girls' lives by providing opportunities for them to show leadership and reach their full potential. This year's theme is Girl Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable; this theme highlights the need to work alongside and in support of all girls in order "to amplify their voices and stand up for their rights."

In many countries, girls don't have access to education like we do in the United States, so many girls aren't educated enough to reach their potential. Additionally, women in these countries are also discriminated against much more, so they aren't being treated well. In order for there to be worldwide equality for women and girls, the world needs to learn what is right and how to treat women and girls with respect and equality. A way to get involved is to donate money and supplies to women and girls that live in impoverished countries. Additionally, you can donate your time in women's shelters, and you can also spread awareness for the cause.
