WiNK Survey: Movie Watching Habits
Posted 12/13/2019 01:47PM

Recently we sent out a questionnaire asking people about their movie viewing/going habits. The survey basically proves that the streaming service industry has taken over the movie rental stores, and is slowly wiping out cable television and movie theaters. About 92% of the participants stated that they watched their last movie on a streaming service, and the other 8% said they watched it in a movie theater. 0% of people that we interviewed rented it from a movie rental store. We believe this data shows how the rental services and cable tv are in decline due to the fact that they are expensive and often inconvenient. Forms response chart. Question title: If streaming service when was the last time you went to a theater?. Number of responses: 36 responses.

People who have said that it was a streaming service they used also stated that they haven't gone to a movie theater in a while, with the average answer being around six months since their last visit (see chart).

We can connect this data and reasons to the fact that malls are in decline due to online shopping, and music streaming is much more popular than physical copies of music and/or videos, likes cd's and dvd's. We believe that these online alternatives are the future due to the affordable pricing and convenience of them.

Another interesting piece of data was that the 94% of people said that they watch shows on a streaming service, and the other 6% watch them on cable. Even though it is apparent that cable television is very unused by many, 60% of people said that they still care about it. We think that cable is still viable because of live news and sports, which are also transitioning into the streaming services. And example of this is hulu, which streams TV shows and is introducing live sports and news streaming; but we feel that if we interviewed another community the results would be different due to the high prices of cable services which can be up to $200+ per month.

Something else that we found interesting is the fact the shows are the preferred entertainment for many kids our age. (See chart to the left). We believe that this is because the shows are now much easier and more convenient to watch than movies. When using a streaming service, you can pause a show for as long as you want, watch it anywhere, and watch the episode of your choice whenever you want. Also, people don't have such long periods of time to watch media and entertainment during their day, and a movie is best if watched in one sitting, which takes a long time. With shows, you can watch them in short intervals that give you good stopping points. Now that we have streaming services, watching shows is preferred. All in all, our evidence shows that streaming services has taken over the movie rental industry and cable television, and that kids prefer to watch shows over movies.Forms response chart. Question title: Shows or movies?. Number of responses: 38 responses.
