As of Wednesday morning, the New York Yankees have officially signed star pitcher Gerrit Cole to a megadeal. Being a die-hard Yankee fan, I am thrilled to hear that this deal has been finalized. Gerrit Cole is now the highest paid starting pitcher ever, signing a contract of nine years and $324 million. This contract breaks Stephen Strasberg's record breaking deal of seven years and $245 million deal which he signed on Monday.
Well, what does this deal mean for the Yankees? For starters, their starting pitching rotation will dramatically increase in talent. Second, it will take a lot of pressure off of their bullpen with Gerrit Cole, Luis Severino, and Masahiro Tanaka leading the way. Even though the Yankee bullpen is one of the best in the big leagues, having a starting rotation that can give you 6-7 innings will be key to their success this upcoming season. After being beaten by the Astros in two of the last three playoffs and being beaten by the Red Sox in 2018, it was clear that something needed to change. They have the talent to make it all the way but the question is, how will they use it ? Brian Cashman, the Yankees general manager has a history of making big offseason signings for this historic franchise and came through once more, stealing the Astros' star pitcher from last season. Is this enough, or will the Yankees need more ? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
