To start off my new series I chose the book War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Set during the time period of the World War I, War Horse is a novel that closely follows the events of a true story. It is about a horse named Joey and his journey. The book takes off when Joey is bought by the army during the war and separated from his owner Albert. When Albert discovers what has happened, he leaves home in hopes of finding Joey and being able to bring him back. Although this book is only 176 pages it is worth the read due to the themes Michael Morpurgo dives into.
He writes about the struggle to maintain hope, the unique bond between man and animal, loss, love, war and its impact on families and soldiers, and somehow manages to turn a tragic story into a somewhat relatable one. Not only is it close to impossible to put it down once you have started reading it, but it paints a pretty perfect image of love. Not romantically, but the type of love that is worth sacrificing anything for.
When Albert leaves home to find Joey, he joins the army. He sacrifices himself to bring home something he loves, he fights for Joey. This is one of the reasons this book is relatable, as it portrays a connection that can exist and thrive amidst constant chaos, something many people have experienced. I believe that if this book was in 1,000 Books To Read Before You Die more people would read this novel and realize the importance of the story it tells.
