Bernie and Joe: Who Would Their Running Mates Be?
Posted 03/13/2020 12:59PM

During the race for the Democratic Nomination, the number of candidates has dwindled down to two: Senator Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden. These two men have captivated the American public for months and eventually, one of them could be the President of the United States. As the Democratic Convention nears closer, many have speculated who Biden or Sanders could choose for their Vice President if they receive the nomination. Some of the names are relatively known, while some are unknown. Here, we broke down the options and front runners for each of the two candidates.

Bernie Sanders:

Many have speculated that if nominated, Senator Bernie Sanders will pick either a woman or a person of color for his Vice President nominee. Many have thought of former Ohio senator Nina Turner and Senator Kamala Harris, who previously was a candidate for the Democratic Nomination. Although Senator Harris has endorsed Biden, there is still a possibility that she will be his pick for VP. However, many are still left to question who he will pick. Some have thought of Andrew Yang as his running mate, but Senator Sanders hasn't mentioned any names as possible running mates. Senator Sanders will likely pick someone who has the same ideals as him and will assist him in getting legislation passed that conveys his political ideals. If he is nominated, then the American people will finally know who his running mate will be after months of speculation.

Joe Biden:

After securing victories on Tuesday in Michigan Mississippi and Missouri, as well as several other states, former Vice-President Joe Biden has all but won the democratic nomination. With these victories leading him very close to the nomination, one question remains, who will Biden choose as his running mate? Surely, a former VP knows exactly what type of role a prospective VP might play in his future administration.

Personally, I have one top pick that Joe Biden may be leaning towards in regards to his pick for VP.

Specifically, former gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams. She has recently expressed interest in joining the 2020 race as a potential running mate for both candidates. On February 5th, 2019, Stacey Abrams gave the official Democratic response to President Trump's State of the Union address to Congress. Within minutes, Biden's campaign tweeted that Abrams, who had lost her campaign for Georgia governor in 2018 by the narrowest of margins and amid accusations of fraud and voter suppression by her Republican opponent, had achieved "in a matter of minutes something Donald Trump failed to do in over an hour — to embrace and give voice to the spirit and core values that make America great." Biden has campaigned for her in the past during her initial gubernatorial run and has also endorsed her in the general election cycle. This puts her ahead of most prospects for this position and it seems like Biden is quite a fan of Abrams.

In his own words, Joe Biden said that the "most important thing in choosing a vice-presidential candidate was someone who is simpatico with me in terms of where I want to take the country." In the end, Biden will choose a VP that will reflect his vision for the country and go along with him through thick and thin just as he has with former president Barack Obama.

Thanks for reading our article, and I hope that we've got you thinking about the future of our country and this race.
