Due to everything going on in the world right now, the need to occupy lots of time is common. Because of this, I am going to continue my series of TV shows/movies to watch, or rather binge, now that we are all quarantined. The TV show I have selected this week is one that I proudly admit to having binged over the course of two days: All American.
All American is inspired by the true story of the life of the NFL Superbowl Champion, Spencer Paysinger. This show revolves around football and high school students. Spencer, the main character, leaves his high school team to go play for a team in Beverly Hills. He develops a bond with the Bakers, a family in Beverly hills, but still finds time to return home to his mother and brother in his hometown of Crenshaw. Spencer is now caught between two worlds - one of Spencer's worlds is the rich and pretty close to perfect Beverly Hills, where his friends wear designer and live in mansions. His other world is South Crenshaw, where his friends are in gangs, the town is very poor, and he lives in a tiny house with his mother and brother.
Not only is the plot extremely captivating, but the show does not shy away from any theme. From drug and alcohol abuse, sexism, racism, the good and bad in relationships, to the variation of socioeconomic status, gang violence, and mental health issues, this show touches on all of it. The way each theme is approached is perfect and extremely entertaining. If you end up watching the show you will realize that the main message behind it is this: the differences that divide us all on the surface possess a deeper meaning, and that is that the complicated, imperfect qualities of humanity is what unites us all.
Elise Newman, Lily Newman, Cece Purkiss, and Colin Costigan can all agree that this show is 100% worth the watch! Watching a good TV show is a great thing to do to distract yourself from all the negativity in the world right now and this show is the perfect show for it.
