The coronavirus has impacted people all over the world, not only in everyday life, but it halted all sports as well. Being a ginormous sports fan, I am especially saddened by this. To be fair, even though game play has been halted, there is still lots of sports news to talk about right now. There is NFL Free Agency and high school basketball seniors have to worry about recruiting in college.
For basketball, many high school seniors are upset that they don't get to play a few more games with their teammates, but most of all, it prevents them from proving themselves one last time for college coaches.
"There are still guys that are trying to make decisions. It's going to impact the transfer market. It's going to impact all of college basketball recruiting," said Evan Daniels, the director of recruiting at 247Sports. In person recruiting has been banned by the NCAA until at least April 15, and Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League has also canceled its April and May events for boys and girls according to the Washington Post.
On another note, coaches looking to complete their rosters with transfers are also stuck without being able to show players around their campuses. Daniels estimates around 300 transfer players are on the men's basketball market alone right now, many of whom may be choosing their next schools based completely on relationships they have made over the phone, unless they wait until late May or early June to take visits.
Our whole world is changing and young college and high school seniors are being affected by it. We'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.
