What to Watch: Bridgerton
Posted 01/15/2021 01:50PM

The short eight-episode drama, which is fairly new to Netflix, was created by Chris Van Dusen, who previously wrote for the Shonda Rhimes shows Scandal and very famous Grey's Anatomy. According to NBC, "The show takes a color-conscious approach to casting: Unlike many period dramas and romance stories, characters of color can be found in every scene." Bridgerton is an adaptation of the first book in a series of eight Regency romance novels by Julia Quinn, taking place in the early part of the 19th century. Bridgerton follows the lives of the eight siblings in the well-known Bridgerton family, four boys and four girls, as they seek the love of their lives. The show begins like any other British drama about wealthy families. Horses pull carriages full of young women dressed in beautiful gowns, patiently seeking a husband, while dapper gentlemen roam the streets. However the Bridgerton family is a little bit different than the rest. Due to the time period and absence of a father, the eldest brother is put in charge of finding a husband for his eldest sister. The show picks up when the husband he choses is not the husband she desires.

This show has become so popular on Netflix that it has not only teenagers watching, but also parents! Parts of the show are not appropriate for a younger audience due to the fact that most episodes focus a little too closely on the love life of the eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton. Despite this, each episode is constructed perfectly. I have struggled while trying to find a new show to watch recently, finding myself bored after a couple episodes; however, Bridgerton will not bore you! Each episode resembles a mini story in the way that it has been constructed correctly. There is a beginning, middle, and end to every episode that leaves you wanting to watch the next.

From the fiery romances to the drama within the town, this show is absolutely worth the watch!
