Senior Reflections: Annie & Yabi

by: Elise Newman

As a senior, I have been reflecting on my past three years of high school as well as thinking about the months to come. In DLI Humanities with Mr. Pannone, we touched upon the thoughts and feelings that follow. We talked about the various major events that are impending for the seniors. College applications, leadership responsibilities, planning school-wide events, SIS, etc. Mr. Pannone has implemented journaling for every student in his class that we will keep up with for the entire school year. This gave me the idea to start a WiNK Senior Journal so that non-DLI Humanities students can take part. My goal is that every Senior who wants to will have the opportunity to share their experience and then check back in at the end of the year to compare their answers. Hopefully, the senior class will grow closer due to the similarities they find in each other's journals and the underclassmen will use this information in preparation for their own senior years.

This week we have an inside look at Yabi Segalla and Annie DeRosaire's thoughts and feelings toward senior year.

Yabi:

How has your senior year been so far? Why?

My senior year has been great so far. The time I spend with my friends has been fun and my classes have been somewhat challenging yet enjoyable experiences.

What are you most looking forward to for your last year in high school? Why?

I'm looking forward to graduating and looking back at my high school experience as a whole and remembering all the highs and lows.

What is causing you the most stress currently? Why?

What was stressing me was writing my supplemental essays, but currently I would be waiting to hear back from colleges.

What three words would you use to describe how you are feeling right now? Why these words?

Excited, accomplished, and curious. Excited because of what is coming next in my life which is college. Accomplished because I have been on time with all of my work and finished all of my applications for college. Finally curious because I'm curious about what my college experience is going to be like.

How are you doing in relation to the college process?

I am doing great with the process, I got in all of my college applications and I'm going to wait to hear back.

What is your favorite class currently? Why?

My favorite class is DLI Chem, the work I do in class at first seemed difficult but Mr. P made the work easy. A big part of why chem is my favorite class is because I can bother Mr. P. It's the best.

Final Words:

My final words to any student would be to do what interests you, take opportunities, and really take the time to learn yourself.

Annie:

How has your senior year been so far? Why?

It's been more difficult than I thought. I was told by many people that junior year spring is the hardest trimester but I am finding senior year fall a lot harder. The workload of 5 DLIs along with applying to 14 schools is draining, but that's to be expected. I'm close to the end of the college work with supplements and stuff so that feels really good. Apart from the work, being a senior is fun. Being the oldest student on campus is kind of a cool feeling.

What are you most looking forward to for your last year in high school? Why?

I am looking forward to seeing where everyone decides to go for college. The excitement and buzz when the acceptance emails start rolling in are going to make such a fun environment on campus. and SIS!

What is causing you the most stress currently? Why?

The workload of my classes is stressful and I have 3 supplements that I am struggling to write. But if you asked me a week ago I would've had a different answer or maybe wouldn't have agreed to this altogether because I was much more stressed.

What three words would you use to describe how you are feeling right now? Why these words?

Tired, Hopeful, Christmas. I am tired, especially coming out of the first trimester but I'm hopeful because it feels like the workload is starting to lighten and we have a break soon, and Christmas, because I'M SO EXCITED.

How are you doing in relation to the college process?

I've already said a lot about it because it's a big part of my life right now. I'm pretty happy where I am, I only have three supplements left to write but after doing the work for 11 other colleges I'm going to take a break until December. I've been struggling with these questions and am feeling a little burnt out. I'm thinking a break will help.

What is your favorite class currently? Why?

I am really enjoying DLI: Language, Analysis, and Power with Mr. Wolfson. I've had Mr. Wolfson for English for the last two years now and I just find his classes very engaging and the topic as a whole is an interesting concept.

Final Words:

Given how fast these months feel like they're going so far, I know in a short while the things that are hard now will be over. and then Christmas will be here!!
