US Soccer Fan On Missing World Cup To Knockout Round

By: Owen Michalowski

On October 10, 2017, the US men's national team faced off against Trinidad and Tobago in a World Cup qualifying match. Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 and did not qualify for the World Cup 2018 in Russia. As a US fan, I was heartbroken because I was really looking forward to watching Cristian Pulisic play in the World Cup. Also, I knew our team was capable of qualifying and beating the teams in CONCACAF and qualifying.

The US had a strong World Cup qualifying tournament and qualified for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. They won a great game against Honduras in the cold which clinched their spot in the World Cup (use this link to learn more about that game). They ended up in Group B with England, Iran, and Wales.

In the group stage, the US finished second in their group behind England and qualified for the knockout round. They had a "win or go home" game against Iran that they won 1-0 with a great goal by Cristian Pulisic. Pulisic went off injured after his goal but he is expected to play tomorrow vs the Netherlands. The US had a great turnaround from the last missing World Cup to making the knockout round. It's not over yet we still have to focus on the Knockout round and hopefully win the World Cup!
