Sports Update: Girls Varsity Basketball

It seems like a lot has changed since the Wooster Girls Varsity Basketball (GVB) team had their eventful last week of basketball, and while this may have been clouded by the recent events going on, we wanted to give you one last basketball check in!

Last Saturday morning the whole GVB hopped on a coach bus to head to their semi-final game against Lexington Christian Academy (LCA), with our two amazing coaches (Coach Sullivan and Coach Hastings). Mr. Hutchins was very forward thinking and equipped us with the biggest tub of sanitizing wipes we had ever seen. Mr. Hastings also put everyone's names on a water bottle which only our manager Sav was allowed to hand out. With those precautions in place, we wiped down all our seats and then we were off to Massachusetts. This was a about a 2 ½ hour bus ride which flies by with the pregame nerves.

We played LCA before in last year's New England tournament which ended in a loss. This year the team was pretty hopeful about winning, even though coach Sullivan made it clear he was perfectly happy no matter what, as long as the team tried their best. It was an extremely tough first quarter for us and we were struggling with our spirits, which translated into how we were playing. This struggle continued into the second quarter and the game wasn't looking up.

But something amazing happened in the locker room at half-time. Coach Chris gave one of his usual pep talks and the girls were feeling slightly better. But then the coaches left, leaving captains, Khamya, Frances and Evie to take over the conversation. What was said in that room remains a secret, but it brought the fire the team needed to move forward. GVB came out strong in the second half and everyone was playing our normal game again. This resulted in a almost 40-point catch-up for the team. Those watching in person and at home on the live stream were shocked and so excited! This resulted in Wooster coming to within 8 points by the last minute of the game. In the end Wooster ended up losing but were so proud of how we played!

The team wants to thank everyone for their continued support throughout the season! The fans support really means a lot and ensured a successful season. Can't wait for next year's season!
