Fashion Statements and Meanings at the Inauguration

On Inauguration Day, you may have seen Vice President Kamala Harris, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Former First Lady Michelle Obama, and countless other women wearing monochrome. Monochrome was used to symbolize unity and was a play on men's suits. These influential women's style choices weren't random or part of a dress code, but a statement. The statements weren't made through a speech, but through the chosen colors, fabrics, and designers.

First off, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden was sporting a tweed coat with swarovski crystal embellishments. The designer Alexandra O'Neill was a shocking choice because she is still a growing designer. While O'Neill has made a name for herself in the industry, she was not on anyone's short list for dressing the first lady. From Dr. Biden's choice of color, a small nod to democracy, and her appreciation for small designers, her outfit is one we won't soon forget.

Next on the list is Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama both wearing a shade of purple for the women's suffrage movement. Both outfits were designed by Sergio Hudson and Harris had a second designer, Christopher John Rogers. Hudson and Rogers are young black designers and the inauguration put them on the map.

While writing this article I realized that no news outlets spent a ton of time analyzing the men's outfits. Why is that? Why at every event from the Oscars to the Inauguration of Joe Biden are women's outfits one of the main subjects? Still, what these women did was amazing being able to bring attention to and make statements about issues through their clothes so the media would have more to focus on rather than just how they looked. While the ladies' outfits were mostly focused on, there was one man that got a lot of attention. Bernie Sanders wore repurposed wool mittens made by Jen Ellis, a teacher from Vermont. This senator from Vermont who simply wanted to keep warm has taken over the internet, being photoshopped into everything, even our own Wooster campus.

Long story short, the fashion was incredible and made a statement. We now just have to wait and see what these women pull off next.
