Book Drive for Pembroke Elementary School

Pembroke offers their students free books to encourage ongoing reading over the summer. We are collecting new and gently used books for Pre-K through 6th grade readers! Please be on the lookout for locations and boxes around campus!

4-Square Tournament 4 Tourette's

The Social Impact student group is hosting a 4 Square tournament to raise money for the Tourette Association of America. The cost of entry is $5 per person for students in grades 3-12 (Faculty are also invited to play!). For more information, contact Matt Eskenazi '19 or Mrs. Rajbanshi.

Wednesday, 2/14, Dining Room Annex
The Blue Lollipop Project, developed by Riley Damiano '20 and the Center For Social Impact will be hosting a Valentine's Day Blue Lollipop Fundraiser in the dining room annex. For every dollar donated, you get a blue lollipop, a child with cancer gets a blue lollipop, and all the money supports pediatric cancer research through The TLC Foundation. With a $15 donation, t-shirts and bracelets will be available. In addition, for $1, you can send a blue lollipop candygram to any student or teacher! Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood and each donation can save up to three lives! On December 11, the Wooster School community came together to donate blood to contribute to the 40,000 pints of blood needed in the U.S. every day.

Annual Turkey Drive

Early on this sunny and cold morning, students from the Center for Social Impact, Julia Bauer, Nicole Caraballo, Brandon Caraballo, Matt Eskenazi, Ben Holloway, Gib Shea, Silas Munk, and Bennett Wattles, enthusiastically collected turkeys and other donated food items from Wooster families, faculty, and staff into our own truck until 9:00 am.

The Wooster team rolled into the Daily Bread parking lot Monday morning with over 100 turkeys, several Grandma Miller’s Vermont Bakery pies donated through the Parents’ Association efforts, and other food items. Once the collection on campus was complete, the students along with Mr. Noel Dominguez and Mrs. Megan Rajbanshi, made the delivery. Upon arrival to Daily Bread, Jill Shaw, event coordinator expressed her gratitude to Wooster School for once again so generously providing turkeys for local families who are in need. Ms. Shaw also mentioned that this year, around 400 families who utilize this food pantry are struggling to afford basic necessities, and for Wooster School to continue to help means a great deal. The Wooster team spent an hour at the food pantry, helping other volunteers bag apples, potatoes, onions, and other food items, and to help out as needed, as today was distribution day. One of the volunteers gave a hug to each Wooster student, and said that she loved the spirit that Wooster students bring with them to help others in the community.

Thank you to everyone who supported the organization, promotion and collection for this year's turkey drive. The success of the turkey drive was a result of the collective efforts of families from Wooster's Upper, Middle, and Lower Schools, as well as faculty and staff and the Board of Trustees. Special thanks to Noel for helping to load, drive, and deliver the turkeys, and to Jon Dupree, parent of 8th graders Jordan and Marcus, who showed up with his truck and offered his time to help out. Our collective effort speaks of the values that a Wooster education strives to instill beyond the classroom, to care for others when we have opportunities, because the blessings of our lives are not meant to be kept only to ourselves, but shared with the world around us.

Medicine Games: 7x7 LAX Jamboree

On the Iroquois National team page it says, "Lacrosse was a gift to us from the Creator, to be played for his enjoyment and as a medicine game for healing the people." The Jamboree was an opportunity for players to honor the roots of the game and play for something bigger than themselves. Each team's entry fee was donated to a community organization of their choice.

Extra Life

ExtraLife is a day-long event where students raise money for children's hospitals through playing games. This year, over 90 people attended the event on campus, and raised $14,791 dollars. The Wooster ExtraLife team is currently the 41st highest funded team of 5175 teams. We changed things up this year, had more going on than ever before, and, for the first time ever, Marissa Troiano from Connecticut Children's Medical Center came to our event!

2-Week Challenge for Puerto Rico
October 19-November 2, 2017

Caylynn Maldonado '18 wanted to do something to help out the people of Puerto Rico, particularly because she has family on her father's side who have experienced first-hand, the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria. She started out with one box in the library, and a poster to let people know what kinds of things are needed in Puerto Rico. Caylynn then presented her idea to the Social Impact Student Group, who enthusiastically embraced this idea to collect items by creating a friendly school-wide competition to see which grade could collect the most items for their peers in Puerto Rico. The 2-Week Challenge for Puerto Rico collected items including school supplies, personal care items, small toys and sweets, and first aid items. Social Impact students created the boxes for each grade and placed them in strategic locations around campus. Each day, the items were counted. Caylynn and Bennett Wattles '18, Social Impact Prefect, made announcements during chapel, lunchtime, and in passing, to inspire our students to join in this effort, and to understand the need for this right now.Thank you to the entire Wooster Community for so generously offering these items for youth in Puerto Rico. We counted just over 750 items! A special congratulations to the 7th grade-who came in 1st place for the most items collected-a whopping 157 items! In 2nd place....3rd grade with a hefty contribution of 141 items and in 3rd place....Kindergarten with a spectacular 96 items! Thank you for demonstrating such heartfelt generosity during the past two weeks.

Pre-K & K Apple Sale for Green Chimneys
Our youngest learners held a very successful apple sale in order to sponsor an animal at Green Chimneys for the year (and to practice sorting money). They raised over $300! Thank you to our students, parents and staff for your support and making this a very exciting day for the Pre-K & K students.
