Wooster Ice Hockey is Back!

By Brooke Thaler, Publications Teacher

On Tuesday, November 14, at 6:00 am, Wooster's hockey players took to the ice for the first time in more than 30 years. 18 boys in grades 7-12 are participating in the program this winter, which will include both Middle School and Junior Varsity games.

The team practices three times a week at the Danbury Ice Arena in that 6:00 am time slot, and will play in games in the afternoons and evenings. 7th-9th graders will play in Middle School games, while 8th-12th graders will play a JV schedule.

Without a hockey program in the past, this year's team has only one senior, Cole Hollett, who played the last two years for South Kent's team in a co-op deal with Wooster. Cole said, "I am very grateful that South Kent has allowed me to be a part of their program for the past two years but I am ecstatic that Wooster has its own ice hockey team."

"We have a core group of dedicated hockey players who would love to play for their school. So with the numbers we now have, it was the right time. We're excited about providing every hockey player and fan in the Wooster community with an opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of the sport through a school program," said Matt Byrnes last year, when news of the team was announced.

Wooster alumni may remember hockey from their days at Wooster, when they skated on "the pond" and boasted a number of championships and undefeated teams.

If you are in the Danbury area, please come to a game. A full schedule can be accessed here. A "Pack the Rink" night is scheduled for Friday, January 12 at Danbury Ice Arena at 7:50 pm. It is guaranteed to be a great evening to support The Generals!

Making hockey affordable to our families is important to Wooster and to date, both current families as well as alumni have generously contributed to making hockey accessible to as many students as possible. It’s been three decades since there was a Wooster hockey jersey. Here’s what they look like today:
