The Athletics Program at Wooster
Wooster School athletic programs provide students with a competitive, team-based experience designed to teach the skills and dispositions required in team membership, while also developing the individual athlete’s skills in a way that maximizes growth and performance. Like all learning experiences in the Wooster community, athletics is individualized -- we meet our athletes where they are and help them to address weaknesses and build on strengths. We have made it a practice to hire coaches who are experts and who share our balanced philosophy.
Along the way, we also provide something that is becoming rare in this age of specialization, the opportunity to make a difference in multiple sports. Our goal is to provide meaningful team experiences while also allowing individual athletes to aspire to the level of skill and achievement that is appropriate for them. At the same time, Wooster student athletes are applying the same dispositions that we emphasize in the classroom -- courage, reflection, collaboration and resilience -- during their athletic experiences. As a result, you are as likely to find a Wooster graduate who is going on to continue his or her sport in Division III or at the club level in college as you are to find someone who simply has great memories of winning that one big game as a part of a special Wooster team.
At Wooster, we like to think that we have preserved the essence of what school athletics are supposed to be about -- team membership, hard work, competition, friendship and most importantly, fun.
